CLIENT - ASSIGNMENT - GOAL

Rock 'n Roar is an emerging rock festival in the Netherlands, focused on both local and international rock bands. As a startup, the festival had no established visual identity, and the goal was to create a powerful brand that would stand out among more well-known festivals. The organization wanted to make a strong first impression toward attendees, sponsors, and partners.

I was commissioned to design a logo and a complete visual identity, to be applied across posters, social media, merchandise, and tickets. The style needed to reflect a raw, energetic festival vibe, while remaining professional enough to gain credibility with potential sponsors.

The aim of the branding was to build recognition and trust around the festival, and to create a visual foundation that could be reused and expanded upon in the years to come.

CHALLENGES - MY ROLE - PROCESS

One of the main challenges was to create a design style that felt raw and rock-‘n-roll. The festival wanted to be distinctive while still remaining accessible to a broader audience, without losing its alternative character. The identity also had to be scalable: suitable for everything from Instagram posts to large banners and t-shirts.

My role was that of graphic designer, and I worked independently on the entire project. I began with an exploratory phase in which I researched other rock festivals, their branding, and their audiences. Based on that research, I created several moodboards focused on themes like power, rhythm, underground culture, and community.

Together with the client, I selected a creative direction, after which I started developing multiple logo concepts. Through several iterations, I arrived at the final design: a dynamic wordmark paired with a bold emblem. I then rolled out the visual identity into a brand guide that included color palette, typography, texture usage, and layout rules for both print and digital media.

RESULTS - IMPACT - REFLECTION

The final result was a complete and recognizable visual identity that perfectly matched the festival’s character: raw, energetic, and bold. The logo featured rugged typography, combined with a symbol that represented both the sound of the festival and the voice of the crowd.

The identity was quickly and widely applied across promotional materials, social media, banners, and merchandise. The festival’s first edition attracted more visitors than expected, largely thanks to its strong visual presence. The client reported that the professional look helped secure more sponsors and that audiences actively responded to the posters and visuals.

What I learned from this project is how powerful a consistent visual identity can be in building a community. I was also reminded of how important it is to support design choices with strategic reasoning, it’s not just about "looking good," but about telling the right story. In future projects, I’d like to push this further by incorporating motion design and interactive elements to deepen the experience of a brand.
